Project 2 Creative Word Play – Word Pairs Process Questions Typography I, GRAP301 Describe your process of creating your thumbnail sketches. 1. Describe the method you used to begin your creative process. I tried to make the word “alley” look like an alley, and the word “blind” look blind sort of. 2. Explain your choice of using the computer or hand-drawing your thumbnails. I choose using the computer because I am not that good at hand-drawing sketches. Also with the effect I wanted to use I thought the computer would be the best choice for my sketches. 3. Share your thoughts about your choice of typeface (i.e., Helvetica, Times)? I just wanted to use a simple font so I could distort and twist the letters. The font I chose was Myriad Pro. 4. Did you have a pre-conceived idea of a design when you began each of the thumbnails or did you experiment and discover visual concepts? A little of both. I knew I wanted to make the word “alley” look like an alley, but I experimented with the word “blind.” 5. Explain how you involved experimentation with the any of the effects of gravity, weight, tension, perspective, movement, positive and negative space. I think I used the weight in Blind so you would read it first even though it is under the word “alley.” 6. What do you believe to be the strengths and weaknesses of each of your thumbnail sketches? The first one doesn’t really convey the meaning of the term “blind alley.” The second one conveys the word “alley” well, however the blind is too small and not easy to read. The third one I don’t like at all. I was just experimenting with different background color and tried something completely different but it didn’t work.
Describe your process of creating your comp for Project 1. 1. What are your thoughts about choosing the thumbnail that you are? Why is it your best choice? I chose to go off of the second one because I liked the word “alley” and I thought I could do more with it. 2. What was your approach to adding color? How would you describe your color palette? How many color schemes did you consider? I just kept it black and white because an alley is suppose to be kind of dark and scary and I thought black would be the best choice for that. 3. How did the introduction of color into your composition influence the effects of gravity, weight, tension, perspective, movement, positive and negative space? I kept it with black and white so it didn’t change much from the thumbnails. Lessons Learned 1. What have you learned in the creation of this design? Was there anything that you learned about the way that you began this project or the methods you used while developing the design? Not really. I learned a lot from the first project we did and took what I learned there about doing the thumbnails and applied it to this project. 2. List the technical things you learned while in this process. I learned more about Photoshop and how to distort and twist the letters. |
