Project 3 FRESH THOUGHTS Cover Process Questions Typography I, GRAP301 Describe your process of creating your thumbnail sketches. 1. Describe the method you used to begin your creative process. I tried to think of what “fresh thoughts” made me think of. I then tried to make five different thumbnails. Two of them are similar because I wanted to see how one thumbnail would look in a different design. Basically I just tried out different things to make you think of fresh thoughts when you looked at my designs. 2. Share your thoughts about your choice of typeface (i.e., Helvetica, Times)? I chose Charlemagne Std Bold for my typeface for the title because I thought it had a fresh look to it. I chose Arial for the line of words because it’s simple and easy to read. The finally I chose cooper black for the “2009 essay from writing 1” because its bold and stood out well against the rest. 3. Did you have a pre-conceived idea of a design when you began each of the thumbnails or did you experiment and discover visual concepts? I definitely experimented a little with different ideas to find one I really liked. 4. Explain how you involved experimentation with the any of the effects of gravity, weight, tension, perspective, movement, positive and negative space. In my last thumbnail I definitely used movement with all the lines going through the composition. I also used the use of negative space in a couple of my thumbnails. 5. What do you believe to be the strengths and weaknesses of each of your thumbnail sketches? I like the typeface in the first thumbnail, however I feel like the design is too plain and doesn’t make me think of fresh thoughts. I like how the words repeat in the background in the second thumbnail, but at the same time I think it could make the writing you are suppose to read, hard to read. The third and fourth thumbnails are similar. I used the same typeface and the idea of a flower in these. I really like the typeface in both and the flower in the third. However, the text got lost in the flower in the third thumbnail and there is too much space in the fourth. I really like the lines I made in the fifth thumbnail, it makes you look a through the page. However the black around the title is too blocky. Describe your process of creating your comp for Project 1. 1. What are your thoughts about choosing the thumbnail that you are? Why is it your best choice? I chose the fifth thumbnail because I thought it had the most potential for being a good cover. It has a lot of movement in it and I can work with it more to make it better. Lessons Learned 1. What have you learned in the creation of this design? Was there anything that you learned about the way that you began this project or the methods you used while developing the design? I learned different solution to make type easier to read. 2. List the technical things you learned while in this process. I learned how to use more effects to make type easier to read.
